Why we do computer repair/upgrades?

On 09/17/2013

I feel it is important to explain to our customers why I started this company.  Yes, there are other companies out there who do what we do.  In the computer repair/upgrade field, along with the networking realm, there are some really great companies out there that we have to compete with.  Companies with larger infrastructures, bigger businesses and customer bases, but they all have one fatal flaw: overhead.

My goal when starting Frax Technologies was to keep costs as low as possible, and I do this by working with as little overhead as possible.  First off, we have no offices, no buildings to maintain.  My goal is to provide onsite service when possible, but when not, I do work from my home.  For a number of years I’ve had a home workshop setup where I can build and work on computers, as I’ve done this as a hobby and for friends and family for more than a decade.

Secondly, right now I am a one man operation.  I don’t have to worry about paying anyone’s salary, providing benefits, etc.  I do have support people I lean on when necessary, my wife works in marketing and graphic design, she also has her own small photography business, so I do lean on her a lot when it comes to designing websites, she has a better eye than I do.  I also have friends who work in the IT field who are more than happy to answer questions if I run into a roadblock, but by and large, I operate solely on my own.  I’ve been working on computers long enough, had enough schooling and training, to be confident in saying, there are very few things I haven’t seen before.  If it can happen to a computer, I’ve probably already worked on a system that had it happen.

On top of all of this, though, I’ve become disheartened by the number of computers that get discarded every year unnecessarily.  Whether it is due to hardware failure, damage from a virus or just getting slow, many people discard perfectly good computers and replace them because they think it will cost too much to have them repaired or upgraded.  Sure, if you take them to the geeks at the blue and yellow store, it would cost too much, but that doesn’t have to be the case.  I’ve done my research, I know what they charge, and if I didn’t understand why they charge so much, I would think it was robbery!  But, the fact of the matter is, they have a lot of overhead to have to pay for, so they charge exuberant amounts for their IT and technical support.

Because technical support from these companies is so expensive, many people think, understandably, that if something goes wrong with their computer, it is cheaper and easier to just junk it and get a new one.  And sure, if those companies were your only option, that would make sense.  This is why I started Frax Technologies, though, because you shouldn’t have to replace a computer just because it had a hardware failure or got a virus.  Just check out our prices, I’ll have comparisons to the big box stores on the different pages for different Services, and you’ll see, relying on FraxTech for your computer needs can save you money and aggravation (I mean honestly, who likes shopping for a new computer?).

Admittedly, though, there is a small trade off.  For the sake of being open and honest with my customers, I will tell you, FraxTech is my second job, and as I said before, I am a one man operation.  The trade off, then, is I am not available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  For most system issues, I’ll be able to provide support in the evenings and on the weekends.  For repairs and upgrades, well, even if you went to the big box stores, they are going to keep your computer for a couple days to do the work, which is exactly what I would do.  My goal is to provide a 48 hour turnaround time for most hardware issues (either service or upgrade).  For software issues (viruses, spyware, malware, etc.), it will have to be determined on a case by case basis.

The trade off then is in time.  But, I have to say, yes, I may take a little longer, but the money you save will be worth it.  I’ve shopped my competition, and what I can say is that for what most companies charge just to diagnose the issue with the computer, not to mention what they would then charge to do the necessary repairs, Frax Technologies can do both the diagnostics and repair.

With all that said, don’t junk that old computer when it has a problem.  For less than what you think, we can have it up and running again.  The big box stores make people believe that computer repair is expensive, they want you to buy a new computer, it’s another avenue of revenue for them, but here at FraxTech, we believe that a computer should not be disposable, that replacing a computer shouldn’t be necessary when it did everything you needed it to before it ran into its problems.  Give us a try, you’ll be amazed at just how much money you can save.
